             Coming out of innocence is almost as though a person is entering a foreign place. People are unaware of the customs of the people and every experience is something new that can be learned from. My experience at Times Squaare was the result of my innocence. The thought of someone stealing my money never crossed my mind that day. I wasn't accustomed to that. My childhood was spent sorrounded by family and friends; people who wouldn't steal anything from me. When a child begins to realize there surroundings, or comes out of innocence, they may be discouraged. Everything is so different that they don't like it. Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, exemplifies this coming out of innocence. J. D. Salinger presents an image of an atypical adolescent boy in The Catcher in the Rye. He doesn't understand and doesn't wish to understand the world around him. Though his innocence regarding issues of school, money, and sexuality has already been lost, he still hopes to protect others f!

             The Catcher in the Rye is a story of a boy falling from innocence to enter adulthood. Holden didn't want to enter adulthood he saw it as a new world, one he didn't understand. J.D. Salinger uses symbolism to show Holden's holding on to his childhood.This can be seen in Holden's name, which maens to hold on. This is referring to Holden not wanting to enter society and all it's phonies. Though he seems very skeptical about the world, he is really just bewildered. Holden, like the typical banana-fish, simply absorbs all experiences, good and bad, adding them to his own knowledge base. Really the poor teenager is so confused about what he should do, he simply regresses socially, hoping to escape the tough choices of adulthood by keeping others from them.
