European Slave Trade

             Slavery had been going on in the world long before Europe began to take slaves from Africa in the Middle East the slave trade was going on for centuries. It was just when Columbus discovered the New World in 1492 they discovered a land where they could grow vast amounts sugar. And to do this they needed mass labor. Sadly to accomplish this they needed to exploit another land. But this time they did not exploit the land's resources, they exploited Africa's people. The Europeans were a very destructive people. The effects of their plunder was never felt in just one place in the world, it was felt all over the world. The motivation African Slave was about the cultivation of crops.
             The effects of the African slave trade were far-reaching. When the Europeans started to take Africans from their native land it was at first done in small amounts. But as more and more plantations were started the need for more labor was sought. According to Duiker and Spielvogel "An estimated 275,000 slaves were taken in the Sixteen Century alone." (1) Most did not make the trip to the Americas alive. The taking of these slaves affected Africa immensely. Africa had many victims, not just the victims themselves but it also affected many families and tribes. Many of the slaves were their Tribes best men and women. Some Tribes were wiped out in the process. The loss of people to be sold as slaves affected millions.
             There was a lot of money to be had in the taking of slaves. Boats from Europe would just load the *censored* to the gills with slaves. Most of these slaves never made it to the end of their journey. "There was mass disease and death aboard these ships the ship was always foul and stinking, they all lay naked head to toe."(2) This is just how it was to ride below in where the slaves lay.
