ABORTION in the catholic church
When Rape and Incest are Involved...Mary, a nice Italian girl from the Bridgeport area in Chicago is raped by her father one night after returning home to find him drunk and coming on to her. She learns three weeks later that she is pregnant. Completely petrified with nowhere to turn, Mary goes to her church. She sits down with her pastor, and he quietly comforts her, and tells her it will be all right. She brings up the idea of having an abortionand he calmly excuses her from the office without discussing this idea. He calls the life beginning to grow inside of her a baby, and claims that baby needs not to be killed but to be loved. What should Mary do? She is carrying her fathers child and is told that this is OK and must be In looking into the opinion the catholic church holds regarding abortions, even cases of rape and incest, I have found out that the church is adamantlyagainst them. However while researching, I also found some interesting factsregarding practicing Catholics and thier views on this topic. Interestinglyenough, the majority of Catholics that have been questioned on this topic wereopposed to the church's harsh rules, and thoughts.
" (Alvare) She goes on further to say "a bottom-line minimum for respecting human life isnot killing it! As our Holy Father puts it, the first right that everybody has is"the inviolable right of every innocent being to life" (Donum Vitae). If this is true than i had to question whether ornot the Catholic god was an advocate for rape and incestual actions. HelenAlvare believes that: "The more humane and more Christian response to aviolated mother . Here, itexplains that the church views the act of killing an unborn child is wrong But Itdoes not say that those who seek abortions are bad as well. Alvare explains thisas "a difference between condemning an act, and judging the guilt of theactor. Sheconsiders there to be to many implications made by making exceptions to therules for abortion: "It would send them [children] the message that people'svalue depends upon their physical condition, the circumstances of theirconception or others' perception of them. " After reading this I wanted to see hersources and where she got her percentages but they were nowhere to be found. Of the other 99% of post-abortionwomen, many report that instead of feeling free or happy after the abortion, they feel burdened with guilt and loss. Everyonehas, in other words, a right not to be killed. " But do those who are violatedhave the right to stop the further violation? In a study in Time/CNN June 3-4,1992 performed by Yankelovich, Clancy. " She follows by speaking to a mother's loss, " According to post-abortionwomen, abortion taints the expected good result Even some post-abortionwomen who became pregnant as a result of rape or incest report that theabortion made them feel further violated. It seemsthat while the Church has strong ideas about abortion, when 'touchy' factorsare placed in and the church is asked to respond, they seem to keep quiteunavailable.
