Missouri Applies for Statehood- 1819In 1819, Missouri wanted to join the Union, although in the North, as aslave state. In would make the balance of power in the Congress unequal.Many Northerners were opposed to the idea. Northerners in Congress refusedto pass the bill. Northerners proposed that Missouri be slave and that nomore slaves were to be brought in and all slave children would be free atthe age of 25, so Missouri would become a Free State. Southerners were opposed to the idea brought up by Northerners. TheCongress was in debate for many months. Henry Clay proposed that Maineenter the Union as a Free State. Also, prohibiting slavery north of the36030', the southern boundary of Missouri. The South agreed sincePlantations would not be able to thrive further North of that line. Manyconcerned Americans thought that the slavery issue was resolved. In 1828, A Tariff was passed to help try to protect New EnglandManufactures. The tariff was as high as 45% to 50% of the originalEuropean price. Opponents of the tariff called it the Tariff ofAbomination. Southerners were opposed to the tariff because they exported
terials to Europe in exchange European goods wereimported to America. The first vote happened and pro-slavery won. His plan said any land acquired from Mexico was to be free land. Later, California applies for statehoodas a free state, but since there were 15 free states and 15 slave statesthe south opposed the move and northerners agreed with the idea. "Bleeding Kansas"- 1856After the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed many pro-slavery people fromMissouri came to Kansas so they could vote to make Kansas a slave state. Douglas though the railroad could only beestablished if the Nebraska Territory was organized. Southerners began to ask for states right. The North said that all ofthe people from Missouri had voted illegally and so the vote did notcount. Many of the students converted to the doctrine which calledfor immediate emancipation, most of the conservative trustees suppressedall anti-slavery legislation. Lincoln won despite allof the odds against him. Thedecision was handed down by Judge Taney. Wilmot Proviso- 1846After the United States went to war with Mexico, a win meant more landbut, the Missouri Compromise of 1820, only dealt with the LouisianaTerritory. The tariff was lowered by Congress. Dred Scott Decision- 1857The Dred Scott Decision was close to a final straw.
