The friendship of Thomas Becket and King Henry could be described as strange and
confusing. When Becket served under King Henry as Chancellor their friendship was close
and caring. They were in separable partners. Henry let Becket make important decisions
and speak for him because he was a very witty person. In my opinion, King Henry and
Thomas Becket's friendship deteriorated when the King promoted Becket Arch Bishop of
Becket and the King were the Best of friends. They took expeditions hunting
together. Becket was even appointed by the King as Chancellor. The King needed Becket
more than Becket needed the Henry. "You taught me everything," said Henry to Becket.
Becket was devoted to his work as chancellor and was grateful that his friend gave him
this opportunity. Becket once said, "My mother is now England," pointing to the ring he
was given for being Chancellor. "While I wear it my duty is to the King," said Becket. This
shows Becket's loyalty to his friend and how serious he takes his job.
Once the old arch Bishop died Henry wanted to replace him with someone who he
could trust dearly. "You are the only man I can trust, " said King Henry to Becket and
therefore he was given the job as Arch Bishop of Canterbury. This shows they were close
friends at this point in time. Henry trusted Becket not to back stab him. This was a very
powerful position Henry appointed Becket to be. Becket, like every other job he had,
began to take his role as Arch Bishop seriously and started to do things that the King
would not agree to. This is the point in this story where I feel friendship and respect for
each other began to fall apart. Becket begins putting God's power over the power of the
King which made Henry absolutely enraged. The King then told Becket, "I loved you and
you did not love me back." Becket is starting to do exactly what Henry hoped he wouldn't
do. The King soon se...
