Sigmund Freud has been described as a controversial figure in the society of Psychology. His ideas that every emotion simmered from a repressed act, usually in childhood, and his constant mental disturbances with Sexual and aggressive themes often put Freud in the spotlight. However, his contributions to this field of research would change the way psychologists and his own psychoanalysts', would view
their patients, even today. Freud had started out with intentions to understand the causes
of Nervous Disease. Not only did he discover that that the mind, like the body could be
responsible for these illnesses, he also proved that emotions as opposed to brain damages
or bad nerves, could be at fault for this sickness.(Klagsbrun 138) This work led Freud to
further his studies in Psychology, and work with his patients. Through these actions,
Freud can be held responsible for discovering his theory of psychology know as
Psychoanalyst, and his extensive work with his theories of the unconscious, dreams, and
"Freud believed our unconscious controlled our everyday thoughts and actions."
(McMahon 14 - 15) He also "...Focused on sexual and aggressive acts submerged by our
unconscious from early childhood." (McMahon 14 - 15) Freud used these beliefs as a
basis for his development of Psychoanalyst. According to Freud, the "...unconscious
appears in some parts of our life that we are not aware of."(McMahon 392) Freud used
this to discover his Patient's problems. Under a treatment know as Free Association,
Freud "...asked patients to talk freely about anything.". (McMahon 392) This was an
opportunity for his patients to describe their feelings, or events in their lives without any
