Book Summary - The Island of Dr. Moreau

             Moral questions are very common in the practice of medicine because of the process in which products and techniques are tested. There is valuable information that could be obtained but there are also negative effects that come from the experimenting. Doctors and judges in the court of law are faced with this problem and are forced to make decisions. In The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells, Dr. Moreau is performing experiments in which he didn't look at the harmful effects of them but only cared about what he could get out of them for himself. Through his creative mind, he made new discoveries but also showed how evil and self-centered a person could be in a situation in which he could gain something for himself.
             Dr. Moreau had a very creative and ingenious mind that was able to explore areas of science many other doctors wouldn't. His experiments showed his intense desire to succeed in new areas of science." The creatures I had seen were not men, had never been men. They were animals - humanized animals - triumphs of vivisection." (73) These animals were being described through the eyes of Pren*censored*, a guest on Moreau's island. He saw these things as products of experiments in which Moreau had taken human parts and transferred them to the animal. He created a new kind of animal that was in between humans and animals in the wild and were now living on the island. He never considered what he would do with the animals after they were on his island. His creativity was expressed in his original experiments, but he didn't look to see the long-term effects of his actions.
             A creative mind but also an evil one performed the experiments. He had to separate parts from a human then reattach them to the animal which would cause enormous amounts of pain for the patients but he never acknowledged that.
