Computer crime started as early as the 1960's. One form of a computer crime is phreaking. Phreaking consisted of using a telephone to make long distance phone calls for free. A guy named John Draper discovered this and called it phone phreaking. He went by the alias Cap'n Crunch, because he found out that the whistles in Cap'n Crunch cereal made a 2600 hertz tone. When you blew into the phone with whistle it would connect you to a line so you could make long distance calls. It mainly worked on payphones and when you used the whistle you didn't have to pay for the call.Some of the computer crime today consists of stealing. A lot of companies that are networked by computers are infected by viruses every year. The Internet is held up by three OC3 lines. They are self-duplicating and they are specific to one kind of computer or OS. Viruses are very difficult to trace their place of origin. A lot of hackers access other places via Internet. You find out there password, then steal their card from them later. The term hacker was first used in the 1960s to describe college students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who couldn't get enough of computers. According to most people this is the definition of a hacker. Back then there were no desktop computers. The Internet was developed in the 1980s. You can steal some ones password by "shoulder surfing" or "piggy-backing".
