Jane Eyre
Compare and contrast the red room scence from the novelJane Eyre to the video adaptation of that of the sectionIn this essay i am going to compare and contrast the red room scene from the novel Jane Eyre, to the video adaptation of that of the section of the book. The novel Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte which was recognized as a work of genius when it appeared in 1847. It tells a story of Jane being orpaned into the household of her evil Aunt Reed at Gateshead, she then was sent to a cruel Lowood charity school. She then continues years later to take the position of governess at Thornfield Hall, were she meets and falls in love with Mr Rochester. The video portrays the same view of the story just missing a few minor details.A scene which is shown clealy in both the novel and video, is the red room scene. Jane has a fight with John Reed (her cruel cousin) for this her aunt Mrs Reed throws her in the redroom literally. The red room is a spare chamber were her uncle Mr Reed had passed away. It was one of the largest and staeliest chamber in the mansion. Mr Reed made Mrs Reed promise to him that she would bring Jane up as one of her own and love and care for her. Sadly Mrs Reed does the opposite.
In the video though she is already screaming and crying as she is thrown into the red room. Also in the novel Jane is portrayed as very strong little girl, with a lot of courage she stands strong until the end. The novel describes the chamber as 'very seldom slept in' and the walls a spft fawn colour, with a blush of pink. The camera focuses on main features in the room, for example it shows the portrait of her dead uncle over and over. The camera moves around to show the room and everthing in it. Shes starts to panick and become worried, as she is trapped in the room she starts to feel unwanted, and forgives her aunt to some extent. As she is only a youg child, in the room where her own uncle died. The room is generally filled with old antique furniture. In my opinion the characters are portrayed very differently in the novel and video. I think in general, the video adaptation of Jane Eyre is more effective and easier to understand than the novel. As she grew as cold as a stone her courage sank. The lights flicker on and off to show that she is trapped, and alone in the room. In the novel you have to imagen what the characters would look like, the settings of the story and the drama.
