Jesus as a Liberator
The wonders of the life and death of Jesus have inspired many to follow in his footsteps. This is especially true in the case of oppressed people all over the world. In Jesus Christ, they find the wisdom and love that helps them to continue their fight for rights they know God wants them to have. The small Central American country of El Salvador was home to many of these oppressed, innocent people. The poor people of El Salvador were deprived of their basic rights: the right to vote, the right to live and even the right to worship freely. Similarly, the poor people of Jesus' time were also oppressed; taken into slavery, robbed of their land and hungry. These suffering people found courage in the lives of Jesus and Father Romero.
Like Jesus who passively and willingly turned himself in to the Romans, Romero offered himself into the hands of the military. He had a vision from heaven and knew what to do. In order to do this they both diverged from the 'order' of the church by confronting the various religious leaders of their time and challenging them to truly practice their religion instead of preaching it to others and reminding them that the mission of the Church is to identify with the poor. They both wanted the Reign of God to be realize on earth in a world without pain, sin, violence and death. All people can do this with the healing power of God. Here, he sought the wisdom of God to find a way to bring peace to his people. This often upset many of the church leaders. Humans can be touched by the Holy Spirit and inspired to purify their hearts and live in equality and love among their neighbors. came to the aid of their people, giving them spiritual strength and leadership, situating themselves among the poor and oppressed. The lives of these men prove that the Holy Spirit comes upon oppressed people in their struggle for freedom. When the anger of the military of El Salvador became to great and the violence too extreme, Romero visited the grave of his old friend Father Grande. Both knew this could mean their lives but the love for their people and their absolute faith in God gave them strength. Father Romero was murdered in the church where he was performing a service. At times, the lives of both these great men were in danger and although they both feared for their own pain, they faced these dangers with faith and never retaliated their anger with violence. Even when people from Romero's congregation were brutally murdered, Romero proclaimed his love for their murderers and asked for their repentance from their sins, similar to the way Jesus said to 'love thy enemy'.
