School Violence

             On April 20, 1999, one of the worst accounts of school violence occurred; Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a shooting spree at their high school, Columbine, killing 12 of their fellow classmates, one teacher and injuring 23 others, until they eventually took their own lives as well. The question of why this tragedy occurred is still unanswered. Is it because the boys like listening to music from artists such as Marilyn Manson, and playing video games such as the gruesome and violent, Doom? Or, is it because the boys had deep seeded psychological and emotional problems, which along with being an outcast in high school, made them snap?
             In 1999, I was a freshman at Chatfield Senior High School, sister school to Columbine, many of my friends attended Columbine and were present that day when the shootings occurred. After having lived through that horrific experience, I believe that there was more behind the reason of why these boys committed the crime that they did. I believe that the Columbine shootings were not a result of playing violent video games and listening to violent music, instead, I believe that these boys, along with all of the other students and children who commit such heinous crimes are acting out the psychological and emotional problems and disorders that they have. In this paper I will try to impinge on your view of the cause of violence in schools is. Is it being exposed to too much violence in the media? Or, is it from having psychological/emotional problems, not only from being a teenager, but also from having a poor family life.
             First, I will begin by acknowledging that a part of me understands that violence in the media, does directly affect each and every single person in the world. However, we as individuals all have the ability to make our own choices about how violence in the media will affect us.
