The Outsiders

             The Outsiders is a classic novel that teaches everyone who reads it that having a family that loves you is one of the most important things in life. This book is about Ponyboy Curtis, a confused 14-year-old, who is a member of a gang called The Greasers. The main conflict in this book is The Greasers and their rival gang, The Socials, are always getting into fights with each other. The Greasers despise The Socs due to their wealthy backgrounds; meanwhile all of The Greasers come from poor, abusive families and life styles.
             "Anyway, I went on walking home, thinking about the movie, and then suddenly wishing I had some company. Greasers can't walk ...It's like the term "greaser," which is used to class all us boys on the East Side. (pg.6)"
             This is the primary example about how The Greasers and The Socs can never get along. These two totally opposite social classes are always jumping their rival gang members whenever they get the opportunity. For example, in the quote Pony is walking all by himself and he realizes that he is not in a very good situation. Later on in the chapter, Pony is jumped by The Socs and is almost killed. Luckily Pony's desperate wails for help are heard and Dally, a very respected leader in The Greasers, jumps to Pony's aid. Pony learned his lesson that day, and never would wall alone again.
             "Well, its two in the morning, kiddo. Another hour, and I would have had the police out after you. Where were you...Ponyboy, what on earth is the matter with you? Can't you use your head? (pg. 45,46)"
             This is another fine example on how hard The Greasers' lifestyles were. Ponyboy and his brothers' parents died in an automobile accident.
