Necessary Characteristics of Being Humane
Necessary Characteristics of Being HumaneThe idea of being human has grown foggy over the course of time. During the time of the Romantic writers such as Emerson and Thoreau, society knew that being human meant showing justice, courage, compassion, and love. It seems that society since the Deep South Reconstruction has created and blurred the line between being humane, showing the before mentioned characteristics, and being merely human, displaying only the physical signs of the species. Organizations, like the Nazi Party and the Klu Klux Klan, and popular television shows have clouded the idea of human decency. Inhumane acts like mass extermination and civil violence have become acceptable because they are performed as we as a society ignore them. Over time, the constant bombardment of these images from newscasts and primetime TV causes us to become immune to their significance. As a result, we as a society often ignore that we must act with justice, courage, compassion, and love toward each other in order to !We begin to lift the haze that clouds the distinction between humane and merely human when we seek justice for each other. Justice is defined as acting in accord with what is accepted as ethical law. W
Without love for all humanity, compassion is quickly lost in the fog of inhumanity. Therefore, this defines what it means to be human: in order to be human, we must exhibit the characteristics of justice, courage, compassion, and love. Many of us agree with this idea and wonder why we should care for showing pity and mercy. Justice, courage, and compassion all coexist under the umbrella of love because without love the successful combination of these three characteristics does not exist. It is not enough only to seek justice; instead, we, like the Allied forces, must also have the courage to act upon the justice we have sought. Sometimes, taking the courage to act means we have to oppose popular opinion. Similar to the Allied forces, we begin to see the humanity in others and ourselves once we seek justice. Without love for all humanity, the Allies would not have sought justice for their fellow humans. This is an example of a strong individual love. In addition to justice and courage, we must also look on each other with compassion in order to revert from being inhumane. By hiding from justice, we simply "go with flow" of injustice. He went against the popular opinion of white superiority and led the peaceful movement toward racial equality. If we do not have the intestinal fortitude to enact the justice we have found, we choose the alternative, hiding from the truth behind a mask of ignorance only to condemn those who are different. On Warzone, the winner is usually determined to be the one who bloodies the other guy the most, and on Celebrity death Match, the loser is simply the one who dies, usually by a horrible method.
