There Eyes were watching God

Zora Neale Hurston was an African-American author in the early to middle 1900s. She was very successful and wrote many novels and stories. Her works have survived through time and are still very popular today.Zora Neale Hurston was born on January 7, 1891 in Eatonville, Florida. She attended High School in Baltimore and graduated in 1918. She then attends Howard University and receives an associate degree. While in school at Howard she publishes her first story in 1921 and for the next 20 or so years she publishes a countless number of works. Some of the more famous works are: Jonah's Gourd Vine published in 1934, Mules and Men published in 1935, Their Eyes Were Watching God published in 1937, Tell My Horse published in 1938, and Dust Tracks on a Road published in 1942. She marries twice and also divorces twice and after her second divorce she lived a secluded life. In 1948 she was falsely accused of molesting a ten-year-old boy. After, the case is dropped she continues to write but also works odd jobs such as being a maid, a librarian, and a substitute teacher. In 1960, she dies in St. Lucie and is buffed in an unmarked grave.Source: Their Eyes Were Watching God chronology


Despite the many different settings and atmospheres there are stretches in the novel when the setting remains the same. The water was rising rapidly and they were running from it. However, he returned and said he would get back the money by gambling. The first setting for the story within the novel is Janie's hometown but then the story quickly moves to Eatonville. Being able to whip her reassured him in possession. It shows how husbands were allowed to treat their wives. He didn't let anybody tell him what to do and some of that attitude rubbed off on Janie. Joe Starks- Joe is the first person Janie fell in love with and he ends up being her second husband. Janie walks to her old house and her friend Pheoby Watson is there with food. The first is that Janie's place is the kitchen and Logan's is the field. "This quote shows how strict Joe was over Janie. Joe became fatally sick and eventually died and that was the end of Joe Starks. The doctor said it was from the dog bite and it was too late to treat.
