gnosticism
1. If Gnosticism had succeeded in implanting its own distinctive ideas into Christian thought, Christian theology would be different in many fundamental ways. Because Christian theology has a strong foundation insofar as its teachings are concerned, the very structure and nature of Christian theology would be radically altered if Gnosticism had been influential. For instance, Christianity holds true the idea that Jesus Christ was in fact human. It is believed that Jesus was born a human, died a human and was resurrected human. This in turn gave support to the notion that there exists an afterlife for those who die. Gnostics do not share this belief. In fact, Gnostics claim that Jesus could not have been human but instead took on a human appearance to free human from evil that was caused by the material world. Therefore, if Christian thought had taken Gnostic overtones, the whole concept of Jesus and resurrection would be invalid.Insofar as the concept of good and evil are concerned, Gnosticism also held a differing view from Christians. Although Gnostics borrowed from Christianity to form many of their beliefs, there rem
Gnostics thus claims that in order to be freed from the evil from our material world, we must also be freed from our material body, but this can only be accomplished through secret knowledge. The potential benefits and dangers, as I see them, of using philosophical and/or scientific arguments to defend Christian belief are many. History would be changed and would appear as though everyone were living a lie, considering how many institutions, beliefs, norms, and attitudes rest on the foundations of the Christian religion. Furthermore, the social upheaval that it would create would border catastrophe. It's like telling people for years that the sky is blue and then one day deciding to tell everyone that it was really yellow. I think philosophical arguments lend more support to Christianity since philosophy itself is also subjective. If the test came back true, then many of the beliefs associated with Christ being human would have more validity to them. But, with evolution being on the forefront of science proving religion wrong, I think it does more to disprove many of the fallacies behind certain events such as creation. Jesus would not be who he was presented to be in the historical doctrines of the Christian faith. Christianity claims that we can be freed from evil through faith in Jesus Christ and the material world is not viewed as inherently evil. I would compare it to the "telephone" game. Philosophy can't really be tested the way science can. How can one really know if what we know now is really true or not? If it's been filtered through the processor of several thousands of people imagination and intellect, all of whom might have adapted the story to fit and accommodate their present situation, then what we know now might be totally different from what supposedly happened. Therefore, God is not seen as a good being. Depending on whether or not a specific philosophy can compliment Christian thought is the deciding factor, I think, on whether or not it is beneficial.
