Mike Nesmith
The biography I did was on Michael Nesmith (also known as Mike, Nez and theoccasional "Wool Hat") who was made popular by the 60's television show "TheMonkees". Although Nez did a lot more notable things in his life time, he will always beplagued with this. The reason why I am doing my report on him rather than someoneelse is because I want to clear his name up in history. This report contains everythingfrom birth, his childhood, his time with the Monkees, his music after the Monkees, hisvideo distribution company, how he pioneered MTV up to his recent multi-million Michael Nesmith was born on December 31, 1943 to Warren and Bette ClaireMcMurray. After the war Bette divorced Warren Nesmith because of incompatibility andWarren left the family in poverty. In the 1950's Bette had been left some land from herFather and they moved to a Negro development in Dallas, Texas. Nez attended ThomasJefferson High School and wasn't exactly the role model student. He made it clear hedidn't like being there so it wasn't an upset to the staff when he dropped out in his senioryear. The only class he did care about was his choir class, where he excelled at first
Mike was rather mad that he couldn't play on his own songs or produce them. They weretold the rent was cheaper. The song was also an example of Michaels somewhat annoyinghabit of choosing song titles that rarely, if ever, related to the song, and are often nevermentioned in the song itself. Whenhanded over to Colgems to be released as the next Monkee single, Kirshner refused toeven listen to it. The next day Mike met with Schneider who although he was not presenthad been told many different stories of the first incident. His future wife Phyllis Barbour was also attending this school, and when she saw a flyerin her dorm it read "Come watch Michael Nesmith play Folk Songs in the Auditorium". He took it down to Warner Cable and they asked him to put together a show of musicshorts for Nickelodeon. Eventually they started to tour. In the midst of the dust and theshock of it all Michael turned to Kirshner and said "That could of been your face,mother!@#$!". Bert andBob called on Don Kirshner to be the music supervisor. And when they did rumors started flying fromjealous peers that they weren't not playing instruments during their concerts but a realband behind the curtain was. Michael then replied that the Monkees were sopopular that they could record Happy Birthday with a beat and it would sell a millioncopies and that if something didn't change he would quit. And with Peter, well they never figured out what to do with his voice. It was a common practice by major record companiesand singing talent at the time, but one that would come back and haunt them.
