Boys and Girls

"She's only a girl" was a very significant statement within the short story, Boys and Girls, by Alice Munto. Boys and Girls was a gender-sensitive short story written in 1968. This story gave an example of the unfair treatment women received throughout that era. It also displayed the hard times that a young girl went through competing with her brother for equal attention and love. Boys and Girls took place on a small, family farm. The mother of this family disapproved of the entire pelting process and wished that it did not take place in their home. The protagonist of Boys and Girls is a young girl, the daughter of t

Through Flora, the young girl was able to attain a sense of equality and individualism. The young girl went against her father's wishes to save a horse from being slaughtered. The plot of this story was both exciting and unpredictable. Another main character of Boys and Girls is Laird. The young girl in this story chose to free Flora by opening the gate to let the horse run free. It was told from the innocent and honest eyes of a young child who was very determined and strong-Mortensen 2minded. Laird changes from an innocent, non-sexist boy, to a discriminating, cruel, young man. There are many symbolic meanings throughout Boys and Girls. The theme of Boys and Girls can be translated differently to each, individual reader. Laird is the son of the fox farmer. The parents did not treat the young girl and her brother equally. Laird goes through many physical and emotional changes throughout the timeline of this story. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**I am a college student and my major is English. Although, the young girl was not treated equally, she was able to prove to her family that she was capable of just as much as Laird.
