Affirmative Action Leveling the Playing Field, or Reversing Discrimination? In its creation during the term of Lyndon B. Johnson, affirmative action was a designed program implemented with the hopes of ending racism and discrimination in this country. How was it intended that our nation carry out this goal? "By instituting a good faith effort by employees and employers to address past and/or present discrimination through a variety of specific, result-oriented procedures."(OAP) In theory this would appear as a logical approach to a problem which has plagued our nation for several years. However, was this the eventual outcome of this seemingly necessary step beyond equal opportunity statutes that simply ban discriminatory practices? Today there are groups that would argue for both sides of this issue. The purpose of this paper is to look at both stances, and see whether or not affirmative action has a place in our society today. Provided in this paper is evidence and claims made by both sides of the argument. "Asians" and "whites" however showed a fifty-one percent increase in applicants yet had an eleven percent decline in admissions. If it is the claim of those who support this program that the reason for its use is to counteract the difference in socioeconomic backgrounds, then that is the level at which it should be practiced. That year over three thousand people applied to the school, twenty-seven hundred of them being "white" or "Asian", and just under five hundred minorities. Affirmative action is not a mechanism of discrimination, but a tool for combating discrimination. ) Now that the negative aspects of affirmative action have been examined, the positive ones will now be addressed. In 1996 this organization released a brief entitled "Affirmative Action: Myths vs Facts. ) By elimi!nating affirmative action, UCLA was able to focus on the quality that should be considered first and foremost in the selection process, and that is performance. While few records are available that represent the practice of affirmative action at the undergraduate level, the records that were presented by the University of California Los Angeles in respect to admission numbers after they outlawed the policy of affirmative action are quite alarming. In addition to this increase in jobs held by minorities as a result of affirmative action, there are also many other visible benefits of affirmative action. For example, after the state of California passed a bill outlawing affirmative action, the University of California system released its admission figures showing at just how great of a level reverse discrimination was taking place.
