Rene Descartes is considered to be one of the most influential figures in the philosophical analysis of the world around us. Reading through the pages of Meditations of First Philosophy one thing becomes clear; Descartes use of language leads him to misinterpret his ideas in a number of places. Throughout the meditations Descartes leads himself into many false ideas through the misuse and misunderstanding of language as he attempts to represent his thoughts and ideas with language that confuses him. The idea that he may be wrong about everything if his founding opinions are wrong leads Descartes to “set aside all the opinions which I had previously accepted”. He strives to take this same approach with what he can accept as truth; anything that can determined without a shred of doubt to it. In separating everything he can’t know as completely true from his mind (which he determines is the only thing he can hold as real) he gives identity to everything from his memory to his eyes. Evidence of this occurs from the very beginning. He states that “I have learned by experience that these senses sometimes mislead me, and it is prudent never to trust wholly t . . .
------------------------------------------------------------------------ **Bibliography** . He has concluded that an evil spirit may be responsible for all his misconceptions and refers to his memory as if it might be this “evil spirit”. Without a flow of interpretable data, the mind creates it’s own imagery. ” Here he refers to his memory as deceitful, again giving a function of his mind (the one thing he believes is real) an identity. In his question of consciousness he further misuses language, leading him to falsely analyze his ideas. ” Here he treats the senses as if they were some foreign creatures, which deceive him. Our imaginations, however, seem to be th! e forerunner of activity while our bodies our at rest. Descartes moves away from his original format of doubting everything not completely without doubt several times. It’s a comprehension of posibility, and therefore is not a basis for absolute truth. It would appear his interpretation of misinterpretations is that something has somehow lied to him. Therefore, illusions must be perceived through means of the senses. He further misjudges his ideas by referring to them as “illusions”. Moreover, if he is to throw out all previous opinions of what cannot be proven without any ! doubt as he sees it, he must also rule out his opinion that his senses has mislead him. Throughout the reading Descartes struggles to follow his initial plan, and to correctly analyze what is real and what is not. it is at present manifest to me that even bodies are not properly known by the senses nor by the faculty of imagination, but by the understanding alone;” Understanding is a function of the mind.
