This is a very heartwarming story of thirteen-year-old twins Caroline and Louise Bradshaw who live on Rass Island located on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in the 1940's during World War II. Louise perceives herself throughout the story as being less loved than her sister and never appreciated in the family.
Her sister, Caroline, is prettyand very talented in singing and the author does a superb job in captivating this jealously throughout the book. · The title of the book could suggest to an adolescent that it is a romance story. Reader Recommendation: * I would recommend ages 10 - 13. * Writing Style: ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. · If the reader has prior knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, the story makes a wonderful connection. Negative Points: · The title, Jacob I Have Loved, is a Bibical quotation and the reader who is not familiar with the Bible could have difficulty making a connection to the Bible story of Jacob and Esau in the Old Testament. It is a great topic for class discussion. Louise One day, the daily ferry brings a stranger, "The Captain", to Rass Island who disgraced himself previous years ago due to fear and Lousie and him become good friends. The Captain is an extremely important character because he is the person who helps Louise to deal with her jealousy and not live in her sister's shadow. Positive Points: · The story sends an important message about feelings of jealousy and what these feelings can do to a person. Louise helps The Captain restore his house that he left many years ago.
