In this essay I am comparing three poems that are about love; "Love is..."
by Adrian Henri and 'A Blade of Grass' by Brian Patten and 'Sonnet' by Elizabeth
Barrett Browning. 'Love Is...' is about the things that people do in a relationship
but in 'A Blade of Grass' I think the person who received the grass is not happy
with the relationship and wants something to show or prove their love but the
poet – Patten is quite happy with it. Maybe the person who received the grass is
feeling insecure and needs something to reassure herself.
Adrian Henri might not be happy receiving the grass as a present because
he says: 'Love is the presents in Christmas shops'. But in another way he might
be happy receiving the grass as a present because he likes the ordinary things in
love, not the expensive or posh things like when he says: 'Love is feeling cold in
the back of vans' This isn't glamorous but it is romantic.
'Love Is...' is about someone's opinion about love and what love means to
them and it is about lots of different things in love, but 'A Blade of Grass' is about
a big, important part in a relationship, not small, unimportant things like: 'Love is
eating fish and chips on winter nights' which might not be expensive but it is fun
because when you're in love with someone it doesn't matter where you are or
I think both poets – Patten and Henri agree that love is being together that
counts, not what you do because in 'A Blade of Grass' Patten says 'I say this
blade of grass will do, it has dressed itself in frost'
This means that it is not perfect but it is natural, unlike presents from
shops, but it is the thought that counts, which is also what Henri means when he
says: 'Love is feeling cold in the back of vans' and &ap...
