poetry
In this essay I am comparing three poems that are about love; "Love is..."by Adrian Henri and 'A Blade of Grass' by Brian Patten and 'Sonnet' by ElizabethBarrett Browning. 'Love Is...' is about the things that people do in a relationshipbut in 'A Blade of Grass' I think the person who received the grass is not happywith the relationship and wants something to show or prove their love but thepoet - Patten is quite happy with it. Maybe the person who received the grass isfeeling insecure and needs something to reassure herself. Adrian Henri might not be happy receiving the grass as a present becausehe says: 'Love is the presents in Christmas shops'. But in another way he mightbe happy receiving the grass as a present because he likes the ordinary things inlove, not the expensive or posh things like when he says: 'Love is feeling cold inthe back of vans' This isn't glamorous but it is romantic. 'Love Is...' is about someone's opinion about love and what love means tothem and it is about lots of different things in love, but 'A Blade of Grass' is abouta big, important part in a relationship, not small, unimportant things like:'Love iseating fish and chips on winter nights' which might not be expensive but it is fun
She writes in a way so you have to think about what she's saying beforeyou can understand it and the lines could mean lots of different things like whenshe writes: 'I love thee with a love I seem to lose', This could mean that she has lost lots of things that she loved, and with allthe love she had given to these things she now loves the person with all thatlove. This also hints that it can't be about God but other lines do, like: "My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight" This says that even though she can't see God she can feel him. because when you're in love with someone it doesn't matter where you are orwhat you're doing. But in 'A Blade of Grass' the person that received the blade of grass thinksthat love should not go wrong and that everything should be perfect. She writes her poem in a way that it isn't clear who she is talking aboutunlike Henri or Patten. I think both poets - Patten and Henri agree that love is being together thatcounts, not what you do because in 'A Blade of Grass' Patten says 'I say thisblade of grass will do, it has dressed itself in frost' This means that it is not perfect but it is natural, unlike presents fromshops, but it is the thought that counts, which is also what Henri means when hesays: 'Love is feeling cold in the back of vans' and ' love is walking and holdingpaint stained hands' These things are simple and not very special but when youlove someone, it doesn't matter, all that matters is being together, because youare in your own little world and no-one else exists. You can't tell if she is talking about her love for herhusband/boyfriend or her love for God or of her love of friends/family becauseshe says:"Smiles, tears, all of my life! - and if God chose, I shall love thee better after death". In 'Sonnet' Elizabeth Barrett Browning views love as something which is veryimportant and she thinks that love should be when you share everything with theone you love, and that you should love them in every way and ignore the badthings like when she says: "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways, I love thee to the depth and breadth and height" This is saying that she loves him for everything he is, and everything hedoes and she will accept him whatever he's like. But itcould also mean that when she is not with her family or husband/boyfriend, shecan still think of them or remember them. Overall I think that Adrian Henri has the best idea about love because Ithink a blade of grass is going too far by saying it's the thought that counts ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. ' Adrian Henri is saying that not everything in love is perfectand that's what makes it fun, this shows when he says: 'Love is when you haveto leave at dawn' He also says at the end of the poem that: 'Love is you and love is me, Love is a prison and love is free' This means that love can be good, like when you go out together, but itcan also be bad, like you do not have any freedom, and you have to give andtake. Browning thinks that love issomething you need and should have, because she says: 'I love thee freely, asmen strive for right'.
