People sometimes don't hear the whole truth about things that the government is doing. George Orwell's novel 1984 is a futuristic book about how the government of Oceania controls its citizens. Orwell uses irony to highlight the theme of Appearance vs. Reality in his novel. He does this by describing the names of the ministries, the detrimental things the government does, and how the characters act completely opposite of how they really are.
The names of the ministries seem to have a positive meaning, but they really don't. The Ministry of Truth really falsifies the real truth to suit what the Party likes. Winston works in this ministry, and that was his job. One of the things that was changed was at first they were at war with Eurasia and in alliance with Eastasia, but then it was changed to being at war with Eastasia and in alliance with Eurasia. (Pg. 31-32) The Ministry of Love was a place of torture. An example of that is Room 101, the worst place in the world. It was where O'Brien tortured Winston with his greatest fear, rats. It made him betray Julia in a second because he was so afraid. (Pg. 235-236) The Ministry of Peace concerned itself with war. They are suppose to keep peace for the people, but Winston couldn't remember when Oceania had not been at war. (Pg. 30) Lastly, Ministry of Plenty is responsible for producing stuff for the economy. They're suppose to produce lots of stuff, but yet, they have to!
ration things. Chocolate is one of the example of what they rationed. The government covers up with these names so the people would think everything that the government does is good.
