The life of a slave
Slavery, a very brutal source of cheap labour, was used even in the earliest civilizations. The idea of keeping slaves for manual labour was very popular and in the 15th century, the Portuguese sailed down to the west coast of Africa and began to set up trading stations. In the beginning of the 16th century, the slave trade prospered and large amounts of African people were sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean, Brazil and Mexico to work on the large cotton or sugar plantations. Africans were captured through a number of ways. Sometimes the Europeans would capture the Africans themselves, however most of the slaves were captured during the fighting between African tribes. The African chiefs sold their prisoners of war as slaves, in return for supplies the Europeans brought. Some slaves that the Europeans bought, became slaves as a punishment for a crime or because they were in debt. African trade dealers sometimes did the dirty work themselves. They would attack other African tribes and capture some slaves to sell to the Europeans. Most of the Africans were forced to become slaves, however there were some Africans who willingly became slaves to escape from hunger and poverty.
Amputation was when a surgeon that the slave owner had requested would chop off a limb of a slave, usually a leg or a foot. Slave buyers would pay more for slaves that have already worked on other plantations. Most slaves that followed this diet, probably suffered from mal-nutrition. "h Amputation- Amputation must have been one of the most cruel form of punishment, apart from lynching. They got given betterclothing and they also had a healthier diet. They couldn't even keep their real names or have a personal life. However, on other plantations, slaves weren't that lucky, they would wear rags or even work naked. Life as a slave must have been very hard and unfair. A slave's diet would be relatively small, monotonous and unhealthy. If their slave owner allowed it, they would grow sweet potato or corn meal on their vegetable plots. The main jobs were done by men and women. Some men and women would work in the mill house instead of the fields. If allowed, slaves married, sometimes in the ¥Big House' however slave couples and families knew that their owner could separated them and sell them anytime they want. Since the slaves couldn't get up, they would have to do their matters right there.
