Canada is a nation of obvious cultural diversity. Over the past two centuries, heavy immigration has made it one of the most multicultural of all industrial nations. These immigrates are among people from Asia, Middle East, and partly from United Kingdom. Given this diversity, many people call Canada a cultural mosaic. Multiculturalism is defined as a social policy designed to encourage ethnic or cultural heterogeneity. This essay will discuss the advantages of multiculturalism and the challenges that Canada faces due to the built up of many different nationalities and ethnic groups. Language is one of the most debatable issues that cause controversy in Canada over multiculturalism. Canada is officially bilingual; however, the country consists of people with many different mother tongues. The minority part of our culture are force to either speak English or French and gradually, they will lose the use of their mother tongues and with that, their unique culture characteristic will also be lost. A major question that faces Canada is to what extend should Canada encourage minority groups to maintain their language and culture. As a bilingual myself
However, I do find multiculturalism a very helpful to learn about other languages and ethnic backgrounds. However, there are still ma!ny controversial debates over the challenges and advantages that Canada faces as the only multicultural country out of all the industrial countries in the world. I believe that it is very complex to maintain my own culture in my point of view. I believe that people identify with themselves more easily with people that have the same race. I find it harder to practice the language Chinese and also some Chinese traditions, as I grew older. At home, I speak my mother tongue, which is Chinese, but I speak English to my peers. People from different backgrounds can get recognition from their achievements that they might not be able to get in a monocultural country. In order to try to accommodate every minority in Canada would causes Canada to become a split society. It might eliminate some stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination. Only in this way will we help promote the uniqueness of our country and widespread the goodness of our own "cultural mosaic". Aside from languages, another challenge that multiculturalism faces is that with such diversity in our culture, minority groups tend to identify with their own subculture instead of Canada as a whole. There are evidences that students are more prone to catalog themselves with the same race as their own.
