Phish Phans
Phans could most easily and accurately be described as people who enjoy the music that the band Phish produces. However, Phish is different than most bands out there, and likewise their phans enjoy them on many different levels and in different ways. Some phans travel across the country on tour with the band from show to show, and city to city. Some take it a step further and bring along recording equipment and tape the shows and take note of song times and setlists. Many more just go to a show or two and are looking to experience an amazing musical epiphany. Some phans primarily go for the large scene that Phish seems to bring on tour with them. Throughout the course of the tour, thousands of phans will pack up their cars with camping equipment and set up makeshift campsites, thus creating little "Phish Towns." So why would kids want to travel around with a band? Why Phish? That comes with a deeper understanding of what Phish is all about. Phish was started in 1983 at the University of Vermont and is comprised of Trey Anastasio on guitar, Mike Gordon on bass, Page McConnell on piano, and Jon Fishman on drums (and vacuum cleaner). It was in the small town of Burlington where they played their first shows, and from
" Their first three-day festival was a success complete with its own carnival rides and other att!ractions including cheese villages. These balloons however, were filled with Nitrous Oxide, which leads me to my next topic. The campground has a very distinct smell: body odor and "dank nuggets" or high-grade marijuana. Throughout the lot, many vendors can be seen trading CD's with others. They jump on trampolines, they have dances, and they take chances. On tour, many phans leave their cares behind, including their hygiene and just indulge. They dress comfortably, usually with males wearing a Phish, or tie-dye shirt, while the females wear loose fitting dresses. In 1996 Phish decided to hold a two-day festival and called it the Clifford Ball. We chatted with him about music for a long time. I had the opportunity to experience this event in 2000, and it was truly a unique experience. Phish is often considered to be the heirs of the Grateful Dead, and everyone affiliates the Dead with drugs. During the set where they covered the entire "White Album," Fishman sang the Yoko line, "If . " Jon Fishman takes out his vacuum cleaner every once in a while and does a solo on it. It is important that they don't sell the CD's however, because that is against the law, and if it were to get out of hand, taping could be banned from shows which would be a great loss because then phans couldn't spread and share the music.
