The mane character in this story is Mr. Hutchinson, who dared to defy tradition. Other important characters in this story are the townspeople. The author as that of any normal rural community describes the setting of the town. Everyone in the story seems horribly uncivilized . He was a round-faced, jovial man and he ran the coal business. The setting covers the very ritualistic and brutally violent traditions such as the stoning of Mrs. This provides the positive outlook and lets the reader relax into what seems to be a comfortable setting for the story. Furthermore, Shirley Jackson uses the setting in The Lottery to foreshadow an ironic ending. He was not someone who was envied because his wife was a scold and they had no children.
