The Lottery is the story written by Sherly Jackson in 1948. Through this ironic short story, she takes pains to describe a village of hard-working, upstanding Americans. I will try to make you understand better this short story, through two following aspects: the setting and character. The setting set forth by Shirley Jackson in the beginning of The Lottery creates a mood of peacefulness and tranquillity. The setting of this story sets up a reader to think of positive outcomes. However, this description of the setting foreshadows exactly the opposite of what is coming. The story begin with the establishment of setting .To begin, Shirley Jackson tells the reader what time of day and what time of the year the story takes place. This is important to get the reader to focus on what a typica . . .
In addition, the description of people and their actio! ns are very typical and not anomalous. The mane character in this story is Mr. Hutchinson, who dared to defy tradition. Other important characters in this story are the townspeople. The author as that of any normal rural community describes the setting of the town. Everyone in the story seems horribly uncivilized . He was a round-faced, jovial man and he ran the coal business. The setting covers the very ritualistic and brutally violent traditions such as the stoning of Mrs. This provides the positive outlook and lets the reader relax into what seems to be a comfortable setting for the story. Furthermore, Shirley Jackson uses the setting in The Lottery to foreshadow an ironic ending. He was not someone who was envied because his wife was a scold and they had no children.
