The underground Man
The world was undergoing great change in the 19th century. Revolutions were common throughout Europe. There was a series of writers and philosophers called philosophs. These authors encouraged the enlightenment philosophies. They promoted the discovery of the natural laws and the possibility of a perfect society. This idea gained popularity in the middle of the century. But, a few began to rebel against this philosophy. These romantics believed in the promotion of the individual and denied the idea of everything was a calculation under the natural laws. In Dostoevsky Notes From Underground he describes a romantic philosophy and the results of a pure philosophical life.In part one of the story the man from the underground makes a philosophical stand. He argues the absurdity of the rational thinkers. He feels that
This story also shows that he disagrees with the idea of nobility, because the officer shoved him and never apologized. He describes the rational philosophies of life lived in "crystal palace" and an "ant-heap". The underground man denied the idea of nobility, and the ideas of socialist society. The underground man talks of his loneliness and how unhappy he is. Instead of opening up to Liza he runs from her. First he talks of an officer who disrespected him. This is the first time we see the true character of this inclusive man. He feels the individual is the most important thing in life. He tries to live out this philosophy of a true romantic! but ultimately ends up alone and depressed. Dostoevsky leaves the story at sort of a dead end leaving the reader to derive his own conclusion. world is not full of calculations and that there are no set rules that everything must follow. He denies the validity of the rationalist, and at the same time illustrates the unhappiness of a true romantic. Liza and the underground man have and obvious connection between them. For two years he followed this man, and promised some sort of revenge or vindication. This man believes in the ideas kin to a true romantic.
