Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman" is an examination of the relationship between aging Chinese culinary master Tao Chu and his three daughters in modern Taiwan. The eldest, Jia-Jen, is an unmarried schoolteacher in her late-twenties. The middle daughter, Jia-Chen, is a corporate airline executive whose career comes before all else. The youngest, Jia-Ning, is a boy crazy twenty year old who works at a fast food joint.Though still at the peak of his culinary powers, chef Tao Chu seems to be getting less pleasure from his work. With the invasion of fast foods and the decline of traditional Chinese culture, no one seems to care about the culinary arts. Furthermore, he is losing his sense of taste. After a few drinks with a good friend, he explains his frustrations. "Eat, drink, man, woman; food and sex, is that all there is?"His daughters, all who still live at home, do little to raise his spirits. Jia-Jen appears to be on her way to becoming an old maid after having her heart broken by a college boyfriend. Jia-Chen is a modern-thinking executive who cannot wait to get out of the house. Jia-Chen was preparing for another Sunday dinner ritual with all of her family, but certain events kept everyone from coming except for her father. The food looked marvelous: there was a dish where a warrior was carved out of the entree; one was served with an aesthetic dragon made of vegetables; and a watermelon was adorned with an ornate design. The lighting showed the audience that these characters were having dinner; normally, during dinner, the floor is not important and faces are bright. Though filmed entirely in Taiwan, the theme of familial bonds is universal. "Eat Drink Man Woman" has a universal theme of familial bond. Jia-Ning's work at Wendy's makes a statement about the mixture of Western culture into modern-day China. Afterwards, she herself received love letters from a "secret admirer. Chu criticizes the soup, saying that there is too much ginger. Chef Chu's love for food provides a background for the story. Love, especially that of Chu and his daughters, often goes undeclared, because for Chu, to express emotion is to acknowledge weakness. They argue about his prudence with ginger. She was somewhat angry that the love letters were fraudulent, but the first man who consoled her turned out to be the person she fell in love with and married. The room was lit so that the floor was dark but the faces of the actors were bright. They look at each other and Jia-Chen says "father" as Chu says "daughter.
