The story takes place in 1963 in the gulf stream, this is where the old man takes his boat out to. The old man lives in a small village by the beach. The main characters in this book are Santiago, manolin, the marlin, los galanos, and the mako shark. Santiago is the old man. Santiago is a widow and he lives alone. Manolin is a young boy and he is Santiago's best friend. Manolin takes care of Santiago and brings him food and drink when he is weary. The marlin is an eighteen foot fish, he is the largest caught in the gulf stream. Los galanos, are the sharks who destroy the marlin. The mako shark is a stealthy killer of the deep. He puts up the biggest fight of all the sharks. His strong teeth break Santiago's weapons and tear the meat off the marlin. The most interesting of all the characters is Santiago. He has a completely meaningful perception of the sea. He talks to the fish as if they were his friends. He explains how the marlin is his friend and he must kill him for food!
             and money. He I superior to the fish, but they are brothers both trying to make their way in life. Santiago learns so much from the sea and the nature of the sea. He attains a new respect for living thing in the sea.
             The plot of the story is the struggle between man and nature. Santiago is trying to catch a fish larger than himself. He faces one problem after another. His cramped hands, starvation, preparation, sharks, large fish, and weakness. He is strong at heart and that leads his to his victory. But also leads him to failure in some way. his strong will cant make the sharks go away. His own stupidity brought the sharks. He speared the shark and caused the bleeding, which ran through the sea. The turning point comes when Santiago finally catches the fish. But even then he starts home and is faced with more problems. The sharks take his fish and all he is left with is the skeleton.
