1984 Essay: Can your mind be controlled?

In George Orwell's novel, 1984, there are three slogans that the party uses; War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength. Each one of the slogans has a significant place in the story. These three slogans are how the Party kept control of all, or most all, of the people in the city. War is Peace. In 1984, Oceania was always at war. The people never knew what the world would be like if they weren't at war. They had the Party to tell them what was true and what was not. According to the Party, war was peace. They told the people that if they weren't at war then there would never be peace in Oceania. The sad thing is the people believed them, and if Oceania suddenly became enemies with Eurasia, and allies with Eastasia, then they hated Eurasia immediately. The only problem with that was th

They must stop independent thinkers like you and me, for their very existence to survive. None of these slogans were true, but to the people of Oceania, these slogans dictated the way of life, and anything else was dangerous to them. This second slogan was probably the reason that the people were the way they were. So in order for them not to be slaves they needed to believe everything that the Party told them to be true, no matter how ridiculous. This third and final slogan is the most important of all. They might even see that ignorance is actually the only dangerous thing. If you can't think for yourself then what is the point of living. e Party could suddenly become enemies with Eastasia, and allies with Eurasia and the people didn't care as long as they were at war. Even though they were actually slaves, as long as the Party told them they were free then they were free. The Party could tell them that 2+2=5 and they would believe them, because the people didn't want to be slaves, they wanted to be free. If the people could or would actually think for themselves then they would realize that they are slaves. This was so the people would never realize that they were actually ignorant and made them think they were better than the ones who thought for themselves. They made the people think that if they could choose what they wanted to do and have an open mind, then they would be slaves.
