The United States and the Lesser Developed Countries (LDC's) can be said to have a give and take relationship. The LDC's give and the United States takes. In the World Systems Theory by Wallerstein, this is an example of a core country that takes from peripheral countries. The core countries are the richest, most developed countries in the world. After these in World systems theory come the semi-peripheral countries. These are countries that have a closer relationship with the most developed core countries, but are not considered to be in the core. The peripheral countries are on the bottom of the heap. They are exploited by both the core and the semi-periphery, and receive nothing in return. They are the poorest, most economically challenged countries in the world. This system is the remnant of colonialism. In the days of colonialism (which are not so far removed), a rich country such as England would take over a territory that was not as technologically advanced, such as India. The country would then exploit the area. It would take all of its available natural resources and industry and ship things back home, or make money from it and ship the money
The goal of France invading Angola was not to make the uncivilized Angolans practice French cultures and traditions, but to strip the area of all the wealth it contained. With the exclusion of China, it does not seem possible, or even probable that a country could move from its orbit in the system. England would not be at all concerned with problems in India, all it cared about was how much money it could make off of it. A peripheral country is pretty much stuck being a peripheral country. A country may not always want to be more western and lose its own culture. This leads to the dependency analysis which states that the poor countries are poor because the rich countries are rich. The core countries would prefer to remain that way, and in turn will continue to exploit the rest of the world- not allowing it to develop and threaten their world position. The wealth of the richer countries rests on keeping the poor countries in a state of poverty. The continually increasing population of the LDC's is another problem which hinders their pursuit of progress. The colonies were believed to be inferior to the dominant Western nations, and therefore were not given any consideration. It is a self serving theory, in that as long as the wealthier countries remain the most powerful (which they will undoubtedly do)! it is impossible for the rest of the world to proceed with development without the consent of those more powerful nations. The economic gap is increasing and the middle class is fading. The core also needs to recognize that a nation does not necessarily need to Westernize to function in the world system. The fact that the differences between the rich and the poor are increasing make the barriers to progress of LDC's even more bleak.
