Black September and the 1972 Olympics

             Twelve months in a year. October and November are filled with cold winds and cloud cover as the winter draws near. December, January, and February, are times for enjoying family and friends in the comfort of your home while in front of a roaring fire. March, April, and May bring hope of the summer, while June, July and August are times for relaxation, barbeques, and fun. So what is it about September? Sometimes, it seems like that is the perfect month for destruction, devastation, and often terror. Chances are if you ever get caught in the middle of a terrorist situation, you won't live to see October. Especially if you are in the middle of a terrorist situation with a group known as Black September.
             Black September was a Palastinian organization that was founded in 1970. It had links to various groups within the Palastine Liberation Organization (PLO), most notably Fatah and the PFLP. Sources claim that the organization was controlled by Yasser Arafat, the leader of PLO, but this has never been proven (cedarland, 1). In fact, many believe that there were several leaders the organization. Some of them include Ali Hassen Salamen, Abu Iyad, and Mohammad Yusuf Najjar. All of them were eagar to seek their revenge on the Israelis, and make their mark on the world.
             The reason for the name Black September is because of a ten day war, between the Palastinian guerrillas and the Jordinian Army, which began September 17, 1970. durining this war, over 4000 Palastinian men were killed. The fighting took place in the city of Amman, Jordan. The skirmishing in the streets of Amman was bloody. Neither side took any prisoners; both sides committed atrocities, many innocents were raped and killed, and most of the city was ablaze. In other parts of the country, besieged refugee camps where PLO fighters had taken refuge were running out of food and water (cedarland, 1).
