poverty

I have to admit, this was the hardest response I have had to do this semester. I’ve never been in a situation where I had to depend on the state for help so this assignment had me lost. I don’t know how realistic I was in my budget for certain things but I thought long and hard and think I came up with somewhat accurate numbers. At any rate, here is my budget for $690.00 a month ( $150.00 of that going straight to food).

$540.00 How much money comes at the first of the month.

$400.00 Rent for the 2 bedroom apartment on the third floor in

Waterbury. Utilities are included and it comes with an oven

140.0 Money left after rent is taken out.

20.00 Transportation – Bus fare

$25.00 Personal Hygiene Products ( shampoo, etc.)

$25.00 put away for school clothes/sneakers

$45.00 Gets put away for savings, emergencies, and extra spending if

When I first moved into my apartment with my children, we didn’t have anything. I lost my job a few months before and we sold everything we had to move into Waterbury because the rent was so much cheaper. I looked in the Waterbury Republican, a local newspaper, and fo

. . .
That gives me less money than I am getting from the state.

I tried looking at both sides when writing this paper – the side of the poor family and the side of the government. While in school they start to realize that other children have more toys than them and better clothes.

It is obvious that in a lot of cases people are getting money that they do not deserve but on the other hand there are many families who are in need of this system – even if they are only getting $700. You can have all of these things and still be working. That is why there are other programs that work with people with jobs but are still considered poor.

The reason that I didn’t budget for child care is because my children are 5 and 7 and they are in school from 8:30 until 3:30. It is feeding their children and giving them a home but is it really helping them? Families are staying on Welfare for years because it is convenient. People made fun of them and I never understood why their parents just didn’t buy them new clothes and give them a bath. und an Absolutely Free column where I got a living room set (not in the best condition) and a twin bed. For the mother, she has to budget the income every month – making sure she pays for all of her expenses.

The quality of life could be better for the mother in any example. Those people are ruining it for the families who desperately need assistance. The problem is you can have all of these things and still be on welfare also.
