             Three dominant labor movements of the century were the American Federation of Labor (AFL) led by Samual Gompers, the Knights of Labor (K of L) led by Terence Powderly, and the International Workers of the World (IWW) led by William Haywood. All three were trying to establish improved ambient factors for working society through atypical approaches.
             The American Federation of Labor seemed to be the most dominant of the three unions. Samual Gompers theorized that the goal of this union would exist by building "a closed structure of largely white, male, skilled craftsmen," (RTAP, p. 3). These men would work for a shorter working day, a more appropriate working environment, and more pay for its members. Gompers felt the union should "understand our industry as a whole," (RTAP, p. 26). Gompers used a more subtle approach dealing with employers, a bill of proposals would be submitted that would either be accepted or denied. If the proposal were denied then the union would "negotiate an agreement," (RTAP, p. 26) until a median was reached, or a strike or lockout would result. Gompers also believed that all members should receive an incentive to retain membership with continuous effort. Inspired by the British trade unions, Gompers felt the appropriate incitement would be to provide the members with benefits. Gompers kn!
             ew what it took to keep the AF of L alive, although a slow but steady progress the union seemed to be the most appealing "product of their time."
             Terence Powderly and the Knights of Labor had a different aspect for the citizens; "the goal of the Knights was to return the worker to a position of equal citizenship and to restore social harmony within the community through a program of education and range reforms."
