sex and gender

Sex and Gender are rooted in biologyWhat does it mean to be male and what does it mean to be female in society today? In the past the terms sex and gender were sometimes used interchangeably, yet today according to the text New Society, sex refers to biological differences between males and females, and gender refers to the behaviours that are associated with being masculine and feminine. This leads us to the two perspectives on the relationship among sex and gender that was also menti

The learned characteristics of being masculine and feminine came from somewhere, meaning who decided that playing with dolls is a girl thing and boys playing with guns is a boy thing before culture existed? Those motives must have come from !somewhere long ago and they must have come from an instinctive motive. Now of course in present time those things are part of culture's norms, making us in fact products of social structure and culture. Second, essentialism, says that gender roles and sexual scripts develop naturally from biological differences between the two sexes. Sexual dimorphism is the presence of secondary sex differences between adult males and females being body size, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Each view makes some very convincing points, making it difficult to actually form a black and white opinion about the above statement. Therefore the base ideas that nature is the ultimate force of who we are when we are born is correct but social forces are the ultimate force of who we become and how we in fact turn out. Factors that lead to the biological belief is that there are other characteristics between males and females besides genitals that are physical. First, social constructionism, says that gender roles and sexual scripts emerge in response to the different social positions occupied by women and men. Based on some interesting evidence from both views, an idea was generated-the power of culture and social forces are forces that modify our biological make-up.
