Babylon Revisited
There are many parts of a story that create the setting and the way the reader views the story. In some stories the view of the story is easier to compile from the amount of detail the writer puts into description. In others stories it may be the way that the writer makes things sound by using metaphors and similes. In "Babylon Revisited," the reader is able to pick up on the setting and view by the actions and personalities of the characters. Marion seems as though she is a very controlling woman. She alone makes the setting of her home seem restricted, a place of organization. She is an unforgiving woman that does not believe anything that Charlie says. She has hated him since the day he locked her sister out in the winter storm after he caught her kissing another man. It is not stated whether Marion knew that Helen had done this act, but her hatred toward Charlie would probably not change. Her hatred can be shown by the mere fact that she will not let his own daughter live with him. This also makes her seem selfish because she wants Honoria to live with them and not her father. Marion has well-behaved children which is proof that she is stern and teaches her kids to respect others. She shows that she is dramatic
You can see how the characters of the story, and their personalities, let you understand the story and setting more than the setting itself. Honoria is a very sweet and kind little girl. The reader can tell that she does not want to have any intentions of giving up Honoria because just as she is about to say he could take her, Charlie's old friends walk in and start making all sorts of noise. "How long are you going to stay sober, Charlie" (Fitzgerald 64). "It is one of the story's nicest touches that Dunc and Lorraine-careless, irresponsible, uncalculating-should nonetheless have ferreted out with drunken cunning the Peters' address and tracked Charlie there" (Edenbaum 1). He sees that the only way to get his daughter back is to stop the drinking and partying and he is willing to give all of that up for her. He has come to realize that his drinking is a problem and has cut back dramatically. Lincoln is the type of husband that does what his wife says and when she wants it to be done. It seems like Charlie will not get his wish after all as stated in F. They come in without any notice which something that she hates. He does not even go out with the same friends. Honoria is the little girl that wants her father but can't have him because of his past. by always getting sick to her stomach when she gets angry. This is probably how they met Charlie.
