"Was there a missed opportunity for social revolution in France and Italy during and after the Liberation".For me to successfully answer this I would like to define what a 'social revolution' is. Marx defines social revolution as "a more or less rapid transformation of the foundations of the juridical and political superstructure of society arising from a change in it's economic foundations." (1)A revolution essentially is a sudden upheaval in society, which fundamentally alters the way, that society operates or who that society is run by. It occurs when the mass of the people desire change that their rulers are unwilling or unable to grant. It can not be the result of the action of a small group of plotters. It is also necessary to understand each countries position within the war and how they became involved. At the beginning of World War 2, Germany invaded Poland, causing France, Great Britain and Canada to declare war on Germany. In May 1940, Hitler's troops attacked the West of France. Then without encountering more than sporadically serious opposition, the German armoured divisions outflanked the Maginot line and raced through northern France. Paris was occupied on 14th June. Italy was dragged into WWII by th

After the war the notion of unity evolved into a very strong sense of partnership. " From the spring of 1944 he had sent prefects and commissaries de la Republique, with authority over a region of several departments, to wrest control from and ultimately dissolve the revolutionary authorities" (8)The CDLs were not disbanded until new municipal councils were elected which happened in April and may of 1945, and also departmental councils in the Autumn on 28th October 1944 the Milices Patriotiques was disbanded, and in protest, 100,00 members held a rally in Paris. The liberation of France happened more because of the Allies, not because of the resistence. " (2)April 25th 1945 was the day that saw the liberation of Italy after the Second World War. The British were not interested in reform, only restoration. It was not very long after this that they were told to dissolve. A large number in the PCF were hoping for a revolutionary seizure of power. More generally, the liberation meant a start to economic reconstruction and what has been called 'a massive social revolution'. The second missed opportunity was that De Gaulle tried to make 'the restoration of the state' the main priority of the liberation. " (4)The Resistance was mainly about justice. So was there a missed opportunity for social revolution in Italy during and after the Liberation? My answer to that would have to be yes. During the whole of 1944 the CNR had been planning for the moment. At first the Communist party maintained a 'dual power' of the revolutionary authorities who were palcing pressure on the provisional government. He actually believed that the liberation should involve internal changes after the Germans had surrendered and left the country. " As a result of the struggle which we are waging with the allies against Hitler's armies, the whole of French territory will soon be liberated.
