Between the years of 1921-1933 they were known as the
"Lawless" years(FBI.gov. 4). They were called that because
of the gangsterism and the public disregard for Prohibition,
which made it legal to sell or import intoxicating
beverages. When the Stock Market fell in 1929, there were
hard times in America. The Depression created more
criminals that caused the expansion of the federal
jurisdiction. The depression also caused the Department of
Justice to create the Bureau of Criminal Identification.
With the rise of criminalism the Federal Bureau of
Investigation opened a crime lab which was made available
for the local and state forces to put together all of their
information. There are over 500 scientists that investigate
all the evidence that would be involved in a crime.
Eventually Congress authorized the Federal Bureau of
Investigation to collect and compile uniform crime status
In 1935 the Federal Bureau of Investigation decided to
open up an academy to train the best law enforcement
officers around. Nearly 90 percent of the people that come
to the academy are rejected(Kronewetter 62.). Not only do
you have to be in good shape but you also must be highly
intelligent. The Academy is located on the Marine Corps
Military Base in Quantico, Virginia.
The Academy established a 5 million dollar town to
train their men. The town is known as "Hogans Alley"
(Kessler 165). The town's bank is robbed 3 times a week and
there is a hostage crisis 2 times a week. During the
training you must go through 645 hours of instruction of
four major concentrations: Academics, Firearms, Physical
training/ Defense Tactics, and Practical Exercises.
