"Just Do It," the virtually world-known Nike slogan states, believing that they are instilling the values of perseverance and determination in the people of the world. However, what they and many others fail to understand are the other substantial benefits of sports. Sports work towards building the character of an individual, the attributes or features that distinguish an individual. Athletics foster qualities such as commitment and discipline, respect and teamwork, and the ability to deal with loss and adversity in an individual. Although superficially just for recreational means, sports builds on a person's character instilling meaningful values in the individual. This sacrifice that I have to make has taught me that it is important to stick to your commitment no matter what the circumstance. Events like the Special Olympics provide excellent proof that sports help build character. Sports teach an individual important social skill, and also teach one to respect others based on their talents.
