             Although Edgar Allan Poe only lived to be 40, he constructed many great works of literature in his short life. Poe was orphaned in early childhood, and he was then raised by the Allen family in Richmond Virginia. Mr. Allen, his foster father, was a very successful businessman. At the age of six, he was taken to England with the family and placed into various private schools. Poe returned to the U.S. in 1820 at the age of eleven. He was still enrolled in private schools.
             At the age of 18, he was enrolled in the University of Virginia, but upon his father finding out about his drinking and alleged drug use, Mr. Allen would no longer pay any of his debts. Of these debts, tuition was included. Poe moved to Boston after leaving UVA, and he began to work much harder on producing his wonderful works of literature. His first published book was Tamerlane and Other Poems.
             Poe moved in with his aunt and young cousin in 1831, and in 1836, 5 years later, he married his cousin. During his stay at his aunts, he was still publishing his literature and receiving various awards for it. Poe's wife Virginia was stuck with an illness that was not to be cured and soon led to death. Poe was very upset by this, and it led him into a
             state of depression. Poe was now considered to be addicted to liquor and various drugs Poe's poems were most well known for their flawless literary construction,
             haunting themes and meters. Poems which fit these categories are The Bells, The Raven,
             and The Sleeper. Although Poe was and accomplished poet, some say that he was most
             well known for his short stories. Most would go to the extent of saying he actually
             invented the short story. His most famous short story is believed to be The Gold Bug,
             which was about a search for a buried treasure.
