Title IX mandates that schools cannot deny any student the right to participate in any educational program based on their gender. While many schools adhere to the official requirements of Title IX, women and girls are not necessarily granted the equality that Title IX is meant to provide. Why is that? Teachers and other administrative figures still hold
. . .
Title IX has made many improvements for our society. Society is beginning to realize that females can be just as capable—if not more—as men are. Teachers can often exhibit differential behaviors towards different genders without even realizing it. Another good example would be the sports program. For example, in the math and science classrooms, men may be called upon more during class and given more praise. Researchers have suggested that this causes women to have lower self-esteem and makes them less inclined to take risks. Although classes such as woodshop and auto mechanics are open to all students, there is still a strong lack of female participation in these classes. This may make females feel inadequate and conceal their intelligence. Steps need to be taken to clarify Title IX and what it is meant for—making both genders equal. We must prevent this by educating people and making them aware about Title IX and its benefits. A person could claim that it is “unfair,” but no educational opportunities are being withheld from women in this situation. This causes major gender equity issues that need to be addressed. These issues are highly related to the benefits of properly enforcing Title IX, and include gender bias in student/teacher interaction, gender differences in learning styles, and girls at risk of dropping ou!
t of school. Now that Title IX is in place, we must bring it to its full use so that we can completely reap its benefits. If Title IX is properly enforced, the negative aspects of these issues can be eliminated.
