The Call of the Wild
The book The Call of the Wild is a book about a dog named buck and the changes he foregoes in his constantly-changing life. The first change he foregoes is from careless housedog, lounging around the old judge's place, to a cunning sled dog, fighting for survival against Alaska's harsh wilderness. The next change in the novel was from a healthy, well- fed sled dog to a starving, half-dead mutt. The third and final change in Buck's life was the change from Thorton's devoted companions to a ferocious leader of a pack of wolves. All and all, Buck has been changed from a lazy housedog to a fierce leader of a pack of wolves in the Alaskan wilderness.Buck's fist change in the novel is from careless housedog to a cunning sled dog. Buck's life in Southern California was easy; he did whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. "During the four years since his puppy hood he had lived the life of a sated aristocrat"(pg. 13
At the beginning of chapter 5, Buck is exhausted. In chapter 3, under the care of Francois and Perrault, Buck is strong and well fed. Between chapters 3-5, Buck changes from a healthy dog to a dog that is nearly dead. In chapter 7, after the death of his master, he follows his yearning to return to the wild and act as his ancestors had. The new lifestyle awoke primordial "tricks of the trade" that had slumbered for generations. At the end of the book, Buck works himself into the position of the alpha-male of a wild wolf pack and lives as a legend to nearby peoples 'till the end of his days. Buck is eventually underfed and becomes malnourished. To jump up and down on the water bowl to break the ice, or to sneakily steal food when the masters weren't looking. "And often, such was the communion in which they lived, the strength of Buck's gaze would draw John Thorton's head around, and he would return the gaze, without speech, his heart shining out of his eyes as Buck's heart shone out"(pg. Bye the end of chapter two, Buck is transformed into a ferocious sled dog. He had so much strength that he was able to fight Spitz and become the alpha male. Buck was stolen by a trusted friend and eventually ended up in the Klondike to work as a sled dog. " His muscles had wasted away to knotty strings, and the flesh pads had disappeared, so that each rib and every bone in his frame were outlined cleanly through the loose hide that was wrinkled in folds of emptiness"(pg. At the end of the book, Buck has transformed into a completing different animal, an animal like his ancestors, an animal like a wolf.
