In his novel Animal Farm Orwell uses the techniques of satire, allegory and fable to expose the brutality and suffering in a totalitarian regime. Discuss the ways in which Orwell uses these techniques to achieve his purpose.Orwell's aim when constructing Animal Farm was to expose the brutality and suffering within a totalitarian regime using three techniques, fable, allegory and satire. Using these three techniques, Orwell successfully created a story that satirises totalitarian regimes and exposes the brutality and suffering. Animal Farm has been based on the Russian Revolution, which became a totalitarian government, with animals representing the major figures and politicians of the time. Totalitarian is the word used to describe a regime headed by a dictator, a dictator being a leader with supreme unquestionable power. Totalitarian regimes are usually designed with good intentions, to provide a better life for the people yet due to corruption the regime creates brutality and suffering and in the end it is only the dictator and his leading men, in the case of Animal Farm it is Napoleon, the pigs and the dogs, that benefit. Orwell uses fable in order to replace humans with animals, allegory to symbolise the characters and events and satire to expose the foolish minds of humans and with the combination of these three techniques Orwell creates a novel that, when using a farm of animals as a form of comparison, this being the technique of both fable and allegory, it evidently shows that a totalitarian regime is only successful for those in power and that the workers never gain anything for themselves and are left living in a brutal and suffering society. By using the technique of fable Animal Farm appears to be an amusing and warm story about a farm of animals on the surface but underneath there is great meaning. Animal Farm is known worldwide as a satirical novel against politics and characteristic traits of human beings. Orwell uses irony as his main form of satirical attack, an obvious ironic point being that eventually Napoleon demonstrated ill treatment towards the animals to a further extent than what Mr. Squealer's second main purpose is to blind the animals from the truth and create excuses for most of Napoleon's actions. These characterisations branch from the use of the technique, allegory, which Orwell uses to expose the brutality and suffering in a totalitarian regime. Squealer, therefore, represents the propaganda of Lenin's government in Russia, propaganda mainly being in the form of deceit. Through these events, Orwell uses allegory to show how a totalitarian regime brings about nothing but brutality and suffering and that it fails in creating a utopian society, or a perfect world. The animals all have highly developed minds, yet some more intelligent than others, that are necessary when making the connection from animal to human. The animals, like humans, think, meet, talk, act, obey, disobey, aspire, fight and respect their leaders, the pigs and mainly Napoleon. The literary form, political satire, combines a critical attitude with wit and humour, yet sometimes humour is not present, for the purpose of mocking or ridiculing the foolishness of man's political behaviour and institutions. Boxer and Clover, the somewhat less intelligent horses, serve as the loyal supporters of Napoleon and they are dedicated to the idealogies of a dictatorship or totalitarian regime, yet they are blind to the fact that they are tricked by their leaders, the pigs, just like the communist supporters were tricked by the Soviet Union.
