Comparison on the works of Rubens and David
Comparison on the works of Rubens and David Peter Paul Rubens and Jacques-Louis David both tied in political themes into their works. Rubens and David were both masters of their era. Not only were they renowned painters, but they were also active political patrons in their own societies. The Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens is considered the most important artist of the 17th century. His style became an international definition of the beautiful aspects of baroque painting. David's was more than just a political statement. This painting shows three Horatii brothers pledging to sacrifice their own lives for a cause. The baroque period was characterized by drama. The periods they were in were greatly shaped and benefited by the works of Rubens and David. Created during the French revolution, The Oath of the Horatii was a political call to order. Leaving behind their wives and children who weep and huddle in a corner, they set off to achieve victory or die trying. Their idealized forms and poses are reminiscent of roman statues of the humanistic period. In this dramatic scene, the characters create perfec!t balance as they create three triangles across the page with their figures. Here we see characters portrayed from a classical story.
