However, some accidents occur when people forget them. The winner becomes a target that all villagers stone to death. Summers had been successful in having slips of paper substituted for the chips of wood that has been used for generationsh(485). The winner, Tessie, is chosen and traditional violence begins. However, the villagers do not know the original meaning of this ritual because during the ritual Old Man Warner said, gItfs not the way it used to beh (427). eClean forgot what day it was,f she saidh(423). Later as the story progresses, the setting changes from a peaceful view to a public mayhem. However, in the story, the lottery is the opposite. Her introduction induces the impression of peaceful atmosphere by her descriptive view of a summer day: gThe morning was clear and sunny, with fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers blossoming profusely grass was richly greenh(484). The use of irony, character, and setting reveals the different situations that a person is a target of death from the daily life. Thus, before the lottery starts, she is not care about the lottery. This setting completely contradicts the first impression that Shirley Jackson first introduces at the beginning of the story; gTessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. The color of the box changed but they did not change the symbolism for what the box stood for which was to choose a personfs death every year: g The box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the orig!
inal wood color, and in some places faded or stainedh(485). h Thus, all villagers become crazy murders by the society and the tradition. However, after she was chosen the winner, she tried to oppose the society of village, g It isnft fair,h(428).
