Scarlet letter symbolism

             Every character in The Scarlet Letter plays an important symbolic role. Pearl, the daughter of Hester, plays a very significant role. She has developed a sense that enables her to see beyond people and their external actions. For a young child like her, she is very clever and quick to perceive. She also has a role of playing a link between Dimmesdale and Hester. . Even though Hester had committed a sin in the eyes of the community, the result of this sin ended up being something remarkable and unique. As Pearl grew older, her symbolic role transformed. Her mother began to realize that Pearl had reached an age where she can now be someone who can take the pain and sorrow away from her. Pearl can also symbolize an angel like being who guides Hester and comforts her. Even though society might view Hester inferior to the rest of them, Pearl will always be there to love her mother and she will be there for her.
             "But now the idea came strongly into Hester's mind that Pearl, whit her remarkable precocity and acuteness, might already have approached the age when she could be made a friend, and intrusted with as much of a mothers sorrow as could be imparted, without irreverence either to the parent or the child."
             After a while, it finally hit Hester how special Pearl really was. She begins to realize that Pearl will soon approach an age to be old enough to comprehend what was going on in the society that surrounded her. Hester soon begins to see Pearl as a friend and as a person who understands her inner feelings. She becomes someone who Hester can trust and someone who can take the pain and sadness away from her. After all, she did play a very fine price for such a valuable thing.
