Sudden Thoughts

Lyndon B. Johnson's Sudden Thoughts on Being President Oh my God, Kennedy is dead and I just got sworn in! Today is November 22, 1963 and I am now the President of the United States of America, the greatest and most powerful nation in the world. Now that my friend is dead, I need to keep up his ideas so the country doesn't lose faith in me. I need to gain everyone's trust and make them realize that I can do just as much, maybe more than Kennedy. I will do my best to lead this country over this period of grief and disbelief. I still can't believe he's dead; he was the youngest president and was so loved. I hope I don't get assassinated like he did. I must stop thinking about death. Alright, now since I'm the president of the United States, I must start taking action from the ideas that Kennedy and I shared and created. I will first obtain enactment of the measures President Kennedy had been urging at the time of his death; a new civil rights bill and a tax cut. Kennedy wanted to pass this tax bill for which he fought all year long. This is the bill designed to increase our national income and Federal revenues, and to provide insurance against recession. And as a friend and successor, I need to get this bill passed

I will also keep the nation's as well as Kennedy's commitments of peace from South Viet-Nam to West Berlin. I will do my best, that is all I can do. I know that the world shares the sorrow that Mrs. Let us turn away from the fanatics of the far left and the far right, from the apostles of bitterness and bigotry, from those defiant of law, and those who pour venom into our Nation's bloodstream. Also I need to make the nation aware of Kennedy's wish to have Americans be the first ones in space. Next, I will urge the nation to build a great society, a place where the meaning of man's life matches the marvels of man's labor. We must end segregation and in order to do so, we must put an end to the teaching and the preaching of hate and evil and violence. We as a nation, will be unceasing in the search for peace; resourceful in our pursuit of areas of agreement even with those with whom we differ, and be generous and loyal to those who join with us in common cause. " And then I will share my profound ideas of my presidency to the nation. Like Kennedy once said to his countrymen, on January 20, 1961, "That our national work would not be finished in the first thousand days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. " I think that John Kennedy's death commands what his life conveyed; that America must move forward. We must also maintain our honorable and determined execution of our commitments to our allies, to the maintenance of military strength second to none, to the defense of the strength and the stability of the dollar, to the expansion of our foreign trade, to the reinforcement of our programs of mutual assistance and cooperation in Asia and Africa, and to our Alliance for Progress in this hemisphere. I must also continue our battle of national work.
