A doll's house

             To learn oneself, one must stand alone without influences from others. Nora stated this in her own way when she said, "I must stand quite alone if I am to understand myself and everything about me." Nora unknowingly took steps before reaching this ultimate discovery. Once she took the last step, the pieces fell together and she fell into this exposition of the human condition.
             As Nora talks to Christine in Act I she says:
             "...I was the one responsible for it... Whenever Torvald has given me money... I have never spent more than half of it... then I have other ways of earning money... it was a tremendous pleasure to sit there working and earning money. It was like being a man."
             Christine was the first to know of Nora's heroic deed. Nora shows great self-importance and seems to be proud of herself as she tells Christine of a step towards the door of independence.
             In the final act of the play, Christine and Krogstad are speaking of the letter. Once things are reconciled between the two, Krogstad decides to take the letter back. Christine insists that he doesn't because of the great despair Nora is in. Christine knows it'll be safe to let Torvald get the letter because Krogstad no longer cares about the matter.
             After the dance, Nora feels guilty of what lies ahead. Torvald receives the letter and is infuriated. Neither Torvald nor Nora know that Nora's name is cleared. As Torvald is scolding her, she is asked if she knows what she had done. She replies with, "Yes I'm beginning to understand thoroughly." (p.62) This is when she realized it was her time to leave. It wasn't until her first "screw up" in 8 years until she realized her role in the house. Once they found out her name was cleared, Nora was forgiven, and that enforced her decision to leave.
