             Everyday, at least 3,000 people are diagnosed with cancer. The cells divide in the body more rapidly and keep growing when they would normally stop. A large mass of cells may form into a tumor. The cancer cells that have developed may interfere with the work of normal cells in the body. The diagnosis of the disease leads to many new developments and treatments that can last anywhere from several months to several years. Strangely enough, breast cancer affects both men and women, the illness being more severe in men. In men, there is a thin plate that allows easy access to the lymph vessels, and the five-year survival rate is only ten percent. (Hereda, 32) In most cases the axillary lymph nodes are cancerous at the first examination. Doctors are able to determine if there are any possible cures by the growth of the chest wall.
             In females eighty percent of all breast tumors are non-cancerous, but if a lump is detected a doctor should be seen immediately. Women should perform a self-breast examination after each menstrual cycle, or if menopause has occurred, monthly. Women should also go to their doctor for a mammography or xerography. In 1972, the estimated new cases were seventy-one thousand and an estimated thirty-one thousand deaths. The American Cancer Society found that seven out if every one hundred women will develop a malignancy.
             There are many different causes of breast cancer and there are certain ways to detect the disease. Many scientists believe that the many substances that lead to the mutation of DNA cells cause cancer. These substances are called carcinogens. A common carcinogen is tobacco. Scientists use several methods to find out what substances cause cancer. They often study as asbestos or paint thinners. They examine people over long periods of time and see who develops the disease and who doesn't. Scientists also test animals and administer certain substances to them to see which ones cause cancer.
