In India, there used to exist a system known as the caste system. It was confined to India. The Caste System is and was not found in any other part of the world. The extreme social segmentation which it caused was just another part of India's culture. Along with being part of India's culture, it was also very closely intertwined with their Hindu religion. The position of each individual is fixed by their heredity and not by personal qualifications or material things. This was determined by the Brahman, who forms, as it were, the pyramid in whichother castes are put into layers. A man belongs to and remains till death in the caste in which he is born. The principle that all men are equal did not apply to India, for it was looked as if it was not possible as a result of the groupings. The caste system united and divided thousands of groups. The system does not however prevent friendship within the different castes, although it was much more likely to find it among people of their own groupings. Differences of status are justified by the religious doctrines of Karma and the re-birth of souls.
